Hi! I’m Diana

My Story

”I moved to Shanghai in 2006 and began my yoga practice and yoga education. I began reading as much as I could on the subject, and teaching as well. As a trained academic teacher I realized I could leverage these skills I already possessed for teaching yoga as well. As a result I was able to develop advanced teaching methodology I could use in my yoga classes.

In 2014 I traveled to Rishikesh, India for intensive study of yogic philosophy and indian culture—much of which I’ve integrated into my own life and practice.

In 2015 I met Laruga Glaser, a world renowned Ashtanga Vinyasa teacher who I have been training with and following ever since. I also continue to practice and train with Margaret Chiu while in Shanghai. It is through the knowledge and wisdom of these great teachers that I’ve been able to establish such a strong personal practice over the years. I am eternally grateful for their help and support.”

Well, honestly neither of us can if we practice unconsciously. So throughout the years practice is most important to protect the body and yourself and being aware of how you do the movements. Doing all sorts of exercise, even the daily movements, if we don't notice of what we do and respond, the higher risk to get a physical body injury.

From my practice experience, saddhana is coming from the place of breathing. Which means we practice with the consciousness breath. And that’s the most important aspect for our life, we in yoga call that Prana - the life force. Adapting into the regular physical practice and associating with the healthy diet.

There is no should or shouldn’t, as long as you do the exercise it’s all the benefit coming afterwards to your body. However, yoga as we consider a yoga science, it is the most suitable and lasting, also healing in physical exercise for us.

I have zero flexibility, can I still do yoga?

Yoga requires more internal practice than external, it’s all about the breathing (pranayama). How you inhale when moving the body, and how you exhale when moving the body. Also how you breath when you hold the pose. So before changing the body into either flexibility or strength, practice under the teacher’s guideline and focus more of your breathing.

Normally we recommend it’s better not to eat 2 hour before the class begins, and should eat 2 hour after the practice finishes. The two hour duration time gives a good process time for the bowels to digest.

How to build up a persistent yoga discipline? Is there any simple routine?

Let's say 3 Asana can be a good starting point to start a personal steady everyday practice. —Persistency is setting through your body, not your mind. So first of all, don’t force yourself to make a sudden change. Instead, go to the nearby yoga studio to practice at least once a week, possibly twice. When the body is used to this regular discipline, then you don't need to modify it as it’s already there. In yoga practice, sun solutions are always the best and easiest gateway to start with. The sequence is set, and it doesn't need a long time but the repetition is needed. 5-10 times are recommended. Then follow a certain amount of time you can add a few poses to stretch after when you are done. This can be your personal steady everyday practice, plus the studio sessions. But try to practice more with your teachers before doing the self practice.

Would you advise a "beginner" practitioner to follow a TTC course for personal growth?

TTC is a teacher training course, it covers practical teaching and practice with all levels, and anatomy, philosophy, etc. Basically it’s the gate way for people who are interested in teaching yoga, or been practicing for a while and willing to deeply know more. It welcomes everyone to join this type of training, either for your own practice or for the future sharing to others.

Which kind of course do you suggest to a beginner practitioner?

What I can suggest to you is that you need to adopt your time and schedule of that period which one you want to take, and whether the purpose of just relaxing or escaping from the daily routine work. If you want a different level of the practice during the retreat, then you may need to accommodate the retreat arrangement, which means possibly affecting your schedule.
